Protocol for injection of the vaccine
1.
The vaccine vials are to be refrigerated until used.
2.
Each vial of the prepared PCV will contain 1.5 mL of vaccine in the form of a suspension.
3.
The vaccine is to be administered subcutaneously at any spot on the patient’s body after thoroughly scrubbing the area using soap water, followed by 70% isopropyl alcohol.
4.
Gently swirl the vial before withdrawing the maximum possible volume of the suspension from the vial using gauge # 18 needle. Some gel particles may be seen adhering to the wall of the vial after withdrawing, which is normal and should be ignored. A 50% overage has been supplied in the vial to assure that an effective amount (1 mL of suspension) is available for injection.
5.
Shake the syringe containing the suspension before injecting. Inject using gauge #18 needle.
6.
The first series of seven vials are to be administered at days 0, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months. Second series of three vials (if warranted) are to be administered at 18 and 24 months and 36 months.
